Director
The director of Cabell County Emergency Services is A. Gordon Merry. Merry started in EMS with S.T.O.P. (Sheriffs Technical Officers Patrol) as one of their original members and eventually progressed up to the Paramedic level. When CCEMS evolved from S.T.O.P., Merry was appointed Deputy Director. After the combination of the Huntington Fire Department's EMS division and Cabell County EMS in 1986, Merry remained as director of the newly reorganized service.
In his tenure as director, Mr. Merry has constantly made efforts to progress the department towards the future. Today CCEMS personnel pay is competitive with the national average and employees work with well equipped, newer ALS certified ambulances. CCEMS was one of the first services in the state to receive the highest rating possible by the West Virginia Office of EMS, the rank of Superior, and has consistently achieved this rating in subsequent years. The rating is a conglomeration of vehicles and equipment inspections, department and personnel certifications, training and education, facilities, disaster plans, communications network.
Medical Director
The Medical Director of Cabell County EMS is David Wright, M.D. Graduating from W.V.U. School of Medicine in 1977, Dr. Wright is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is a career emergency physician in West Virginia and has over twenty years practice experience. Dr. Wright came to the Huntington area in 1983. And was appointed by the Cabell County Commission in 1986 as medical director for Cabell County EMS.
Dr. Wright plays a key role in the CCEMS management staff by overseeing all medical aspects of CCEMS operations and communications. Dr. Wright is instrumental in paramedic education and re certification by testing each paramedic on skill competency yearly. He also sits as head of the Quality Improvement team. Dr. Wright is also responsible for the Tactical EMS and Disaster preparedness protocols and procedures. As medical director, Dr. Wright works closely with the CCEMS Administration and training division to help provide the most up to date, quality training to its employees so they can continue to provide the best pre-hospital care in Cabell County.
